Spoiler: The author describes the year he spent experimenting with different productivity projects. Obsessed with the topic shortly after graduating university, he tried everything from working a 90-hour week to meditating 5 hours a day to getting up at 5:30 in the morning. He also interviewed experts and read all the productivity literature he could. He concluded that productivity is the confluence of time, attention, and energy. He ends with five quick suggestions for maximizing productivity.

Spoiler: Presenting live at Google, the author shares some productivity experiments he conducted on himself: watching 296 TED talks in a week, limiting smartphone use to only 1 hour a day, living in isolation, working a 90 hour week, and more. After spending a year on such experiments, plus researching productivity as much as he could, he ended up writing the book and shares his conclusions with the Google audience. Energy management and attention management, he says, are just as important as time management.

Spoiler: In this short video, the author reflects on how productivity has evolved over the decades; that is, we moved from a “time economy,” to a “knowledge economy.” In the “time economy” there was a direct relationship between the number of hours worked and the amount of work produced; the knowledge economy requires heavier mental lifting, which can often be done in less time but asks for greater focus. Both time management and focus management are key.

Spoiler: With the help of animation, the narrator explains some of the book’s key suggestions on how to be more productive (arrived at after the author spent one year experimenting with all possible methods). One is the “rule of three”; that is, set three goals for the week and three for each day. Doing so creates a structure in your brain that helps the productivity along. Another is to do a “brain dump,” meaning write down all the things you are holding in your mind, which frees up brain power.
