Spoiler: The author says that becoming bulletproof is not only about protecting yourself but also about protecting other people. This could mean knowing what to do in an active shooter situation or how to conduct yourself when you need to ask your boss for a raise. She says there’s a difference between being fearless and living fearlessly, that she is not fearless but she has learned to live fearlessly. We can add to our strengths in thin layers, like the layers of fabric that together make up a bulletproof vest.

Spoiler: The author discusses the difference between failing and being a failure, advising that “if you’re not failing, you’re not doing.” Failing instructs us, gives us feedback, and lets us know we are trying and living. She describes the resilience of the four U.S. Presidents under which she worked as a secret service agent, saying they know they’re going to get criticized and “shredded” every day and they keep working anyway. She says life is messy and we must learn to pivot, clean up the mess, and keep going.

Spoiler: The author, a former Secret Service agent who served four U.S. Presidents, says that one key to overcoming fear is to stop surrounding yourself with fearful people. She says that nobody in the Secret Service is afraid or shows fear, in spite of all knowing that they could take a bullet at any moment, and that being in a no-fear environment enhances the “bulletproof” quality of each member. She also says it’s important to serve something greater than yourself, and not to do things just for you.
