Spoiler: The author defines a perfectionist as someone who not only sees the gap between the ideal and reality but feels compelled to do something about that gap. The book details five different types of perfectionists and offers tips for getting the best out of each one. For example, the “Procrastinator Perfectionist” won’t start a project or relationship until the conditions are perfect. On the up side, these people are extremely well prepared; however, they may never start their project due to lack of perfect conditions.

Spoiler: The book offers tools and strategies to help perfectionists deal with themselves. Grounded in research and using many case studies, the book’s goal is not to eradicate perfectionism but to maximize its positive aspects. Although commonly viewed as a negative trait, perfectionism can become a superpower when properly channeled. “Adaptive perfectionists” make their perfectionism work for them, while “maladaptive perfectionists” are constantly punished, by themselves or others, for their perfectionism. The author suggests that perfectionists reframe negative self-talk, set realistic goals, and embrace imperfection.
