Spoiler: The author begins by asserting that small changes in a child’s gut health can set off positive ripple effects in their neurological and immunological development, to name only two of many areas. Change can most successfully be made by empowering kids to make their own choices; that is, by giving them, in a fun way, knowledge about the ingredients in the food they eat. Teaching them to be savvy food-label readers (looking out for damaging ingredients like MSG and artificial dyes, for example) can set them up to be healthier eaters as adults.

Spoiler: Dr. Elisa Song says she wrote the book because she has limited time for seeing patients in person and wanted to get this information out to as many people as possible. She asserts that the epidemic of childhood anxiety and depression is in part related to lack of movement, that physical movement is as important as the food you put in your child’s body. She encourages parents to think of medicine in a new way: that food is medicine, mindfulness is medicine, and medicine is medicine but should be last on the list.

Spoiler: The author discusses the gut-brain connection, explaining that our gut microbiome has certain types of bacteria that are now called psychobiotics because they help support optimal neurotransmitter levels (for example, serotonin, which helps us stay calm and relaxed). At least 50% of our dopamine is made by our gut microbiome, and more melatonin is produced in our gut than in our brain. If we’re having trouble sleeping or staying focused, for example, we should look first at our gut microbiome, often referred to as “the second brain.”
